67 minutes for Mandela

On the 18th July 2010, representatives of the SA Rugby Legends, Dale Santon and Chester Williams, rolled-up their sleeves and joined an unique initiative at Tafelsig High School. As part of the “67 minutes for Mandela”, volunteers joined learners in giving this school a “face-lift”. The atmosphere was truly amazing and high-profile citizens and local community members alike, formed a formidable team!

The day involved the painting of classrooms, general maintenance of the school and the desks were sanded and varnished! In many schools, these things are taken for granted but one only realize real gratitude, when there are truly no funds available. In these areas, graffiti on classroom walls are as common the crime we read about in the local newspapers and a clean classroom wall is not a necessity , but a luxury.

Dale Santon, Ex-Springbok/SA Rugby Legends had the following to say about this emotional day:

“ I grew up in Mitchells Plain and this truly brings back a lot of memories, some memories happier than others. The community has supported me so much during my lengthy career as a rugby player and therefore I am grateful to be able to give something back to the community. I also had to make the choice at a young age, and luckily someone who I will be forever grateful for, helped me in making the right decision. Without that support and trust, my life would have turned out completely different, probably for the worst.

The young people of these communities face various difficulties/obstacles on a daily basis. Very often the path to joining a gang seems much more rewarding than rather going to school and to equip yourself with the necessary knowledge to stand your ground in society. Participation in sports, not only helps the kids to stay healthy and fit, but it also gives them that feeling of being part of a team(brotherhood/sisterhood). Apart from the physical benefits of participating in sports, it also stimulates the mind and teaches the youngsters human interaction skills. Not only being a worthy champion, but also honorable in defeat. These lessons are not only confided to sport, but will benefit them in all aspects of life. Very often kids will do anything to get some recognition and there is a longing to be part of something/a group. Unfortunately, in most instances, the type of group chosen will be one that participates in illegal activities(Drugs, theft, etc).

Kids will do anything to be accepted by their peers and that’s where the real challenge comes in. Peer pressure is something we hear so often, but to truly understand what it means, one will have to put yourself in their shoes for a day. Seeing the world through their eyes, all the pain and sadness. That longing for something better!

We(as public figures) understand the importance of making a change and if we can convince only one learner to stay in school and finish their studies, then we have accomplished our goal and that means that there will be one less child on the streets and two parents that can close their eyes at night, knowing their child is safe and asleep.”

Trevor Manual and his wife Maria, together with Cameron Dugmore and Marius Fransman also joined to offer their help for this worthy cause.

A special recognition must be given to Mr. Steven Hewitt, CEO of TigerTurf which was the main sponsor of this day and without him, this day would not have been such a great success. TigerTurf is the supplier of all artificial surfaces used nationwide in Legacy Parks. Because of the current economic conditions, finding a sponsor to help with the food and beverages for the volunteers proved to be a very difficult task. Mr. Hewitt came to hear about this two days prior to the event and showed immense generosity by donating the money needed for the food and drinks. He ( Mr. Hewitt) also committed to paying a percentage of the profit made on each m² of artificial grass sold, and this will go towards SARLA for future development programs.

Thanks to Johnny Allan(CEO SA Rugby Legends) for all his support!
