SA Rugby Legends Western Cape Golf Day
The eLan SA Rugby Legends held the 2nd SA Rugby Legends Western Cape Golf Day at the Rondebosch Golf Club on Friday 5 February, which turned out to be an enormous success. This year the players were invited to “SWING A CLUB FOR ROB” to raise funds for the newly established Legends (CELEBRATE LIFE) Trust that was founded by SARLA & former Springbok flank Rob Louw, who had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of melanoma cancer and remarkably survived round one of his battle against the disease after been flown to the United States. Whilst there he had time to think about his predicament and after conversations with the CEO of SARLA, John Allan and a message of support from the legendary American cyclist Lance Armstrong, who himself had been struck down by cancer and survived the ordeal, decided that a cancer awareness campaign should be set up and a trust fund put in place to raise funds for Legends of sport who might fall prey to this dreaded disease. Needles to say the support for Rob was tremendous on the day with a number of legends including Braam van Straaten, Percy Montgomery, Louis Koen, AJ Venter, Andre Joubert, Breyton Paulse, Chester Williams, Gary Gold and Robbie Kempson all joining Rob on the course together with 120 golfers all told. A substantial amount of money was raised but more importantly the rugby camaraderie, the new friendships established and remarkable support for a truly worthy cause made the day a memorable occasion that Rob Louw, the Patron of the Legends Celebrate Life Trust, and those who participated will long remember. |
