SA Rugby Legends Take U12 Rugby Team to Monaco

On the 22nd February 2016 The South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) will once more travel with an U12 school’s rugby team to the annual U12 St Devote Rugby Tournament in the Principality of Monaco.

After last year’s successful trip with the U12 team from Orchards Primary School in Johannesburg, it is now the turn of young players from the Bonteheuwel area in the Western Cape to represent South Africa at this tournament.

Established by the Rugby Federation of Monaco, and with the patronage and support of Princess Charlene of Monaco, the tournament was founded in 2009, initially as an exchange with a Corsican club. Both Corsica and Monaco share the same Patron Saint – Saint Devote – hence the naming of the tournament in her honour.
The aim is to develop the values of rugby beyond the sporting aspect and brings together U12 children from the different cultures in Europe and now Africa.
Princess Charlene enlisted the help of SARLA last year to facilitate a South African team to participate, and is now working alongside SARLA on key rugby development projects both in South Africa and in Monaco.

“Princess Charlene of Monaco was so impressed with the team we brought across in 2015, so we were very keen to include a South African team again this this year”, said SARLA President Gavin Varejes.

“Princess Charlene of Monaco was so impressed with the team we brought across in 2015, so we were very keen to include a South African team again this this year”, said SARLA President Gavin Varejes.

“Her philosophy of sport has the ability to change and save lives and ties in perfectly with SARLA’s objectives. We are working closely together to help on key projects that not only help develop the game of rugby here, and in Monaco, but help to uplift those less fortunate,” he said
“We decided to select a group from the Western Cape this time and, with the help of the JAG Foundation’s Primary School Rugby programme, we have selected a team of under twelve’s from Bonteheuwel and Firgrove Primary schools”, said SARLA CEO Stefan Terblanche.

“… our mission is to develop rugby at all levels and this way we are giving an opportunity to youngsters who would not normally have the chance”

“It would be easy to take a group of players from schools where rugby is traditionally played, but our mission is to develop rugby at all levels and this way we are giving an opportunity to youngsters who would not normally have the chance”, said Terblanche.

SA 7’s High Performance Manager and 7’s rugby legend, Marius Schoeman, has been brought on board to work with the youngsters and will also travel with the team on the tour.

He brought along 2015 World Sevens Rugby player of the year and current SA 7’s team member Werner Kok to a training session last Saturday to share some of his advice and motivation with the youngsters.

Other countries with teams participating include hosts Monaco, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Abu Dhabi.

The rugby tournament takes place on Saturday February 27 2016 at Monaco’s Stade Louis 11. The children will also visit key attractions in the Principality, as well as take part in workshops and rugby clinics with the other participating teams.
