Cape Town Tens with the Legends

The Castle Cape Town 10’s has now officially become the biggest Rugby Tens competition in world rugby in four amazing years and that is due largely to the hard work of Ron Rutland and his two former Springbok partners Robbie Fleck and Bob Skinstad.

With this in mind it was fitting that the SA Rugby Legends won the tournament for the third time, hosted by the oldest rugby club in South Africa Hamilton Sea Point Rugby Club on the popular tournaments fourth anniversary.

The team, which was entered into the Veteran section of the competition included the likes of Warren Brosnihan, Pieter Muller, Gavin Passons, Deleray du Preez, Lucas van Biljon, Quinton Davids, Werner Greeff and the recently retired former SA Sevens player Jovan Bowles, and Hanno Coetzee to name a few.

In between games on day one the SA Rugby Legends teamed up with the JAG Foundation and the International Legends in hosting a development clinic for some 100 youngsters, introducing them to the fundamentals of rugby at grassroots level. The youngsters seemed to enjoy their time tremendously, and being coached by past Springbok and Provincial players hopefully planted the seed for them to continue exploring this great game.

The team had a great start to the tournament beating the False Bay Warriors 51-0 and Durbanville/Belville 28-7 on day one. Day two was equally successful with the Legends winning their opening encounter 35-7 vs the Aquaholics before going on to beat the Queens Barbarians 61-14. After beating the Pukke Barbarians line up 28-7 they went on to meet the Christina Noble Children’s Fund International Legends side in the semi-final narrowly scraping home 14-12.

Fittingly the Legends met hosts Hammies in the final winning the hard fought match 22-5 and so ending up as the only unbeaten side in their section bringing down the curtain to yet another successfully run tournament-long may it continue.

Special thanks to BMW for the vehicles, 1Time Airline for flying the guys down to Cape Town and Southern Sun Hotels for accommodating the team.
