Bells Traditional Scottish Gathering and Highland Games in Fort Nottingham

SA Rugby Legends were once again on song at the fourth Bells Traditional Scottish Gathering and Highland Games in Fort Nottingham where many Scottish expatriates and locals gathered for a memorable day of entertainment in the most appropriate highlands weather in the midlands.

The Haggis was piped in, which gave Glaswegian John Allan goose bumps and the games were formerly opened by Lorne McClean. The regiments of KZN and the Legends participated in all the events with great vigor and enthusiasm on the day as the whisky flowed and the pipes played in true Scottish tradition.

The Umvoti Mounted Rifles, the regiment that the late great Springbok captain Philip Nel served with during the Second World War, won the team event in the military section of the Kilted Mile while Hentie Maartens galloped home like a mountain goat to win the other section for the Legends even romping passed many of the soldiers who had started a long way ahead of him. Richard Bates managed third spot a long way behind Hentie saying that he could see the former Sharks and Springbok scrumhalf finishing when he had only got to the top of the hill. “This guy is amazingly fit” Richard quipped “he probably chases goats and sheep over the mountains on his farm every day” he jokingly concluded.

Former Springbok Pieter Muller would have taught a few highlanders a thing or two in the art of tossing the caber and former Junior Springbok Andile Nyembezi once again performed admirably in the walk the weight event while the Legends once again won the tug of war and shot putt events. Grateful thanks went out to Murray Hume from Ladysmith for bringing in some good old farming legends of rugby who had represented the Pumas and Northern Natal - as it turned out they were a huge asset to the Legends team and will no doubt be invited back.

Danny Fisher a true Scot himself was there entertaining the crowds with his Angels and with THE FOOD AND BEER FLOWING FREELY ALL DAY IT CERTAINLY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS and we look forward to seeing every one back there next year again
