Kearsney College Old Crocks 80th Anniversary
The Kearsney College Old Crocks rugby match steeped in tradition celebrated their 80th Anniversary this year and when one goes
back in time it is quite amazing the impressive list of Springbok and provincial legends that have taken part in what has become
a most important part of the schools social calendar. Great names like Bill Zeller, Harry Newton-Walker and the legendary
Keith Oxlee have all contributed over the decades in making this traditional day of rugby camaraderie the success that it has become.
This year was no different as the Old Crocks came together to take on the Kearsney First XV beating the youngsters quite handsomely
50-19 recently. More importantly however the Old Crocks in conjunction with the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) raised R70,000
for paraplegic Quinton van Jaarsveld and what a revelation it was talking to the young man.
Quinton was severely injured in a schools game playing scrumhalf for Suid Natal against Durban North College in 2000 and was
paralysed from the chest down and has been in a wheelchair ever since. He cannot talk more highly of the Old Crocks and SARLA
who he says have been so supportive. “The orginisation has creative such an incredible initiative” he enthused “I cannot thank John Allan and his team enough” he concluded.
He also gave huge credit and thanked Saru and the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Fund for all their assistance and spoke very highly
of Wayne Fyvie’s support over the years. He further explained that he has been truly blessed having been given the opportunity
of being able to do freelance work for SA Rugby.Com and now recently was appointed Sports Editor of the community newspaper
South Coast Fever, something he really and truly enjoys.
Certainly Quinton hasn’t lost his passion for the game and was joined by Ari Seirlis at the Old Crocks Day at Kearsney College
in the mist belt of Bothas Hill where he enjoyed time out with some great rugby men and as always appreciated their remarkable
support.
Well done to the Old Crocks and the South African Rugby Legends Association, long may you continue to grow and help those in
need and congratulations to the Kearsney family for another successful Old Crocks Day - long may the tradition continue.
