Bennie Nortje played scrumhalf in his rugby career. He also captained the Lions team.

He was included in the 1995 World cup training squad and later represented the Emerging Springboks on tour.

He has played club rugby for the Pirates in JHB for the past two years and from 2001 to 2003 he played Currie Cup for the Lions. In 2000 he played Currie Cup for the Pumas. In 2000 he also played Super 12 for the Bulls. From 1994 to 1999 he played Currie Cup for the Lions.

2003 - Bennie Nortjé's appointment as captain of the Lions rugby team has again underlined that there is no substitute for experience, the scrumhalf led the Lions for the second year running in the Vodacom Cup final against the Blue Bulls in Pretoria. The Lions beat the Blue Bulls 54-38 in last year's final.

Played for the Sharks in the Super 12 and Currie Cup in 2005
