Western Cape Legends

The SA Rugby Legends Western Cape was successfully launched on 17 July 2008 at the Spine Road High School in Mitchells' Plain.

All Legends got together at Durbanville Rugby Club from where we travelled on the official Springbok bus to the venue, accompanied by traffic officials with sirens at full blast. On our arrival we were treated with the very best of food and drinks before the start of the clinic.

Ian Macintosh headed the clinic for the first hour after which Mike Bayly took over while Mr Mac took all the coaches of surrounding schools for an hour-long knowledge transfer. We catered for around 150 kids but more than 200 actually arrived due to interest after the cavalcade through the streets. However, the more than 35 Legends (Well done guys!!!) that attended were up to the task of assisting with the clinic.

We were able to hand out t-shirts to all the boys as well as rugby balls and kit to the invited schools in order to continue practising the skills that was addressed during the clinic. After the clinic the kids stood in front of the bus and sang “Happy Birthday” to Mr Mandela. From there they all received cold drink and a nice warm pie.

After a nice hot shower we gathered in the hall for a fantastic 3-course meal organised by the school. Rob Louw, John Allan and the Headmaster made speeches and by 18h30 we headed for the bus for the return trip to Durbanville.

We would like to sincerely thank all the Legends, Springbok Atlas, Peninsula Beverages, Pie City, Bovlei Cellars, Brandhouse, Spine Road High School and Barrons Caterers for contributing to a very successful day.

More good news is that JAG Foundation approved the funding for the installation of the first Legacy Park in the Western Cape at the premises of Spine Road High School.

We anticipate the TV footage of the day to be broadcasted by the end of next month; we'll try to keep you informed.

What a special day it was for everybody.

In our efforts to now keep the ball rolling, we wish to extend a warm invitation to the next event which is planned for the 20th of August (details to follow soon so ink this date into your diaries please). We intend to organise another coaching clinic for the primary school kids which will be followed by a rugby match between the SA Rugby Legends and Durbanville Rugby Club Old Crocks, so even if you don't play on the day, please attend and show your support while catching up with “old” rugby friends.
