It’s Rugby World Cup time again. And as our boys take on the world in Japan, a group of past rugby heroes are taking on the bookies and betting on a brighter future for deserving young players from underprivileged backgrounds.
The South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) and Interbet are lending their might to the Legends vs Bookies campaign for the duration of the Rugby World Cup 2019. The campaign is a joint effort by SARLA and Interbet to raise much-needed funds for rugby development through initiatives such as VUKA Rugby and the Legends Cup.
VUKA Rugby is a partnership between SARLA and SA Rugby. The VUKA League Programme identifies opportunities for gifted players from less fortunate backgrounds, providing a platform for play and funding towards developing their talent.
The Legends Cup is geared at providing opportunities for young players through coaching, training, fundraising, organising matches and passing on the passion for rugby in areas that might not have been exposed to the sport before.
Each participating Rugby Legend in the Legends vs Bookies campaign will place their bets through the Interbet platform online. And when the RWC ends, any winnings in their accounts go towards SARLA’s Educational Trust. The site is open to the public too, and you can go online to see the bets the Rugby Legends are placing and make a prediction or two of your own.
No matter what, these rugby boys will not be sent home. They’ll be placing their bets to the very end and they’ll be keeping track of the students they’ll be helping every step of the way.
Stefan Terblanche, CEO of SARLA said, “Nobody is more excited about Rugby World Cup season than the members of SARLA. And this way, Legends have to ‘put their money where their mouth is’ and bet on whoever they think will win. It’s great fun and we could be helping the Rugby World Cup champions of 2023 or 2027 develop their talent – so we can’t lose.”
When you visit Interbet’s Ruggaz section on their website, you’ll recognise a few famous faces from SARLA – including former Springbok Captain Corné Krige – who are participating in Legends vs Bookies. And they’re even adopting new nicknames to get into the spirit of it:
- Corné “7-star” Krige
- Wayne “The Destroyer” Fyvie
- Justin “The Answer” Swart
- Craig “The Pro” Davidson
- Butch “Big Swing” James
Interbet’s Daily Rugby Predictor game runs for the entire Rugby World Cup with odds on each game. Legends and the public alike can place multiple bets. Log on to back our betting boys for a good cause at https://www.interbet.co.za/RugbyPredictor.aspx
