It’s not just the start of the 2017 Super Rugby season that is going to keep rugby supporters busy this weekend but two SA Rugby Legends events across the country.
STILBAAI – FEBRUARY 24 & 25 2017
Some of our Legends will take the four hour scenic journey along the Western Cape’s Garden Route to the charming seaside village of StilBaai to support the Bertie Barnard Primary School in their fund-raising efforts for new rugby poles.
Pieter Muller, Stefan Terblanche, Johan Kapp, Rob Louw Johann Muller, Ross van Reenen, Gavin Hume and McNeil Hendricks will host a coaching clinic for young players from the area before attending a gala fundraising dinner that evening. On Saturday morning they will take part in a golf day as well as a wine tasting evening all in aid of raising funds for their new rugby poles.
MALELANE – FEBRUARY 25 2017
The Malelane Rugby Club’s annual Rugby Weekend kicks off on Friday 24 Feb with a series of matches played by clubs and schools from all over Mpumalanga. To make the weekend extra-special, in honour of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations, a headliner match will see the SA Rugby Legends play against the Pumas Legends.
The SA Rugby Legends team, handpicked by coach Ian McIntosh will feature the likes of Dave von Hoesslin, Wim Visser, John Mametsa, Kennedy Tsimba and Werner Cronje.
The Pumas Legends squad has been selected and will be coached by legendary Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse. Stonehouse is on a short break from his coaching duties for the Toshiba Brave Lupus in Japan and has called on the services of Pumas Legends Ronnie Uys, MJ Mentz, Jaco Bouwer, Ashely Buys, Ashwin Scott, Francois van Wyk, Doppies Le Roux, Jovan Botha and Valentine van Wyk.
The game will be quite an emotional one, as it is the first Legends game since Joost van der Westhuizen passed away. At his public funeral service, SARLA President Gavin Varejes announced that the Legends will change the scrumhalf number 9 on the back of the jersey to reflect the J9 logo in honour of Joost. For this game, former Springbok scrumhalf Dave von Hoesslin will be the first Legends scrumhalf to wear the jersey. After the match the jersey will be auctioned off and all funds will go towards the J9 Foundation.
Kick off is at 15h40 at the Malelane Rugby Club and entrance to the game is R10 per person.
The SA Legends have also been invited to spend Sunday morning on a game drive through the Kruger National Park and will also be treated to a talk at Skukuza rest camp in the park before heading home. To make it a family affair, their families have been invited to join in the fun and festivities.
