This year’s KAP sani2c Adventure Race from 2 – 4 December may be taking place on a smaller field but the stakes are as high as ever, with some of South Africa’s top teams confirmed. And among the impressive list of competitors is a host of stars from the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA), who will be partnering with six teams from Logistics Giant DSV.
The KAP sani2c is the largest, and one of the oldest, three-day mountain bike stage races in South Africa. The course covers 265km of scenic, hilly trails between Underberg and Scottburgh in KwaZulu-Natal. The KAP sani2c not only provides a trail that allows mountain biking’s best to test their mettle, it also supports communities along the route who depend on income from the event.
Always up for a challenge, former Springbok Captain and SARLA Board Member John Smit, with his teammate, Rugby Legend, John Slade, are gearing up for the ride. They will be joined by Paul Muller from DSV and teammate Warren Brosnihan; Jeremy Thomson & Grant Guerin; and Trevor Halstead & Matt Pennefather.
John Smit says, “Riding sani2c is an unforgettable experience. And I’m so excited to be doing it again this year. Cycling has become a passion following my retirement from rugby and the sani2c is one of the most challenging rides on the map. It’s a great test of speed and endurance and it’ll be interesting to see which of the Rugby Legends will come out on top. We all still have those strong competitive instincts. This is an event that brings people closer together. One of the best things about sani2c is the camaraderie and collaboration you see on the trail. And the local communities need our support”.
December’s sani2c event is set to be a challenging ride in the summer heat, with potential wet weather along the way – conditions that are quite different from the May edition of sani2c, but South Africa’s former rugby stars are primed and ready to test their endurance on the hills of KZN as they pedal their way to Scottburgh.
