This weekend, on Sunday, 18 October, the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) brought Durban-based Rugby Legends together with weFEEDsa, the Food and Beverage Company and Checkers, to pitch in and flip burgers that were distributed to hungry people in and around Durban at various locations.

The day saw a whopping 10 000 burgers distributed at various weFEEDsa venues across KZN, with Rugby Legends and weFEEDsa volunteers all manning the grills. The Food and Beverage Company, having heard about the work #RugbyUnites was doing, donated 10 000 burger patties, while Checkers sponsored 10 000 hamburger rolls and packets of chips. Through weFEEDsa, bottles of cool drink and water were also handed out with the burgers.

SARLA’s #RugbyUnites has travelled the country, with the help of headline sponsors Cell C and Richmark Holdings and distributed over 10,000 food parcels across several major South African provinces. #RugbyUnites was established to help people nega-tively affected by COVID-19 and has gained major momentum since its launch as lock-down began. And it continues to pick up pace.

Zahid Fakey, CEO of weFEEDsa says, “weFEEDsa was created as a means to help those who need it most during lockdown. And we have been overwhelmed by the sup-port we have received from the SA Rugby Legends during this challenging time. See-ing our volunteers work alongside these great players is testament to the fact that we can mobilise to make a difference when it is most needed. Thank you to all who helped us on Sunday”.

Gavin Varejes, SARLA President and CEO of Richmark Holdings says, “Rugby Unites has taken on a life of its own. And as we continue to take it around the country, we couldn’t be happier that companies like the Food and Beverage Company and Check-ers are standing up and noticing what is being done. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors and all the volunteers that have assisted in bringing much-needed food to people who have felt the economic effects of the pandemic”.
