The annual SA Rugby Legends vs Drakensberg Rugby Club encounter took place on Saturday August 20 at the Winterton home of the Drakensberg Rugby Club. In what has become a traditional end of season rugby encounter, the SA Rugby Legends fielded a strong side this year lead by former Natal scrumhalf Hentie Martens, making the trip up the road from his Nottingham Road farm. Joining him were the likes of former Sharks Dieter Kriese, who was a member of the first SA 7’s squad in 1993, Pieter Dixon, Skipper Badenhorst, Wayne Munn and Dirkie Strydom and a recent former Lions player Doppies Le Grange who made the trip down from Gauteng.
The Legends put in a strong performance in scoring 7 tries to 3 for a 39 – 19 victory.
An SA RUGBY LEGENDS tour is not complete without passing on the passion for the game and we would like to thank Greg Miller who joined Coach Ian McIntosh in leading the clinic for the young rugby players of the area, which included players from the Drakensberg Boys Choir rugby teams. The morning session saw the youngsters being given master classes in rugby skills from our legends.
Post-match, we once again enjoyed great hospitality with a spit braai at the club and a chance to mix and mingle with the local rugby supporters and to watch the Springbok’s first 2016 Rugby Championship encounter against Argentina. At one stage we all thought this would be a repeat of last year’s match against the same team, but, luckily, our Boks pulled through and celebrations continued throughout the night.
Our thanks & appreciation to the Drakensberg Rugby Club for once again hosting us so well and ensuring that we had a great time in the Berg.
A big thank you to our SA RUGBY LEGENDS and their families for making the time to join us and for once more putting their still very fit bodies on the line, despite the aches and pains the next day!
And, as always, to SARLA’s sponsor Tsogo Sun, who provided accommodation for some of our Legends at the Drakensberg Sun.
We look forward to return next year.
