Johannesburg, 2 June, 2020: Last Friday (29 May), members of the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) joined forces with Richmark Holdings and Tightline Fisheries to distribute food parcels and 20 tons of potatoes to needy communities in KZN. Tightline Fisheries provided Joint Aid Management (JAM) the potatoes, which were duly distributed by the team.

Two tons of potatoes were delivered to LIV Village just outside of Durban, in the Cottonlands community. LIV Village has been actively supporting underprivileged local communities for several years, and SARLA is a regular contributor to the Village’s valued efforts.

As poorer communities continue to struggle in the wake of COVID-19, SARLA, Richmark Holdings and Tightline Fisheries ramped up their efforts on Friday, for a community that has been particularly hard-hit by lockdown measures, with many people unable to support or feed their families.

Several well-known ex-players were on-hand. However, this time they weren’t passing a rugby ball, they were offloading heavy bags of potatoes and food parcels like a well-oiled backline. Kobi Van Schalkwyk from the coffee company, 3 Lads and a Toucan, also volunteered to help. Familiar names who arrived included:

  • Odwa Ndungane
  • AJ Venter
  • Butch James
  • Ian McIntosh
  • Charl McLeod
  • Trevor Halstead
  • Justin Swart
  • John Slade
  • Stefan Terblanche

David Brown, Country Director for JAM said, “Eradicating hunger in Africa is an ongoing mission. We need the support of high profile people like our dedicated Rugby Legends to inspire others to help, too. We value Stefan and his team’s commitment to pitching in on Friday and we hope many of our fellow South Africans will join the fight against starvation, too.”

SARLA CEO, Stefan Terblanche said, “When we visit the poorer communities in our country, we see first-hand the desperation that the effects of our economic shutdown has caused. We have to come together to try and ease that burden for our nation’s poor. There is strength in numbers, and if we keep coming together as a team, we can make an indelible impact.”
