The South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) have identified a potential future South African rugby star and are committed to securing support for his future in as many ways as they possibly can.

The talented youngster, Nande Maduna, is currently just 16. He was spotted in 2016 whilst a student at Reiger Park, a school which participates in the VUKA Rugby Devel-opment Programme in the Valke region.

Founded in 2001, the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) is an NPO with two complementary objectives; one of supporting the needs and interests of our country’s rugby legends and secondly, its progressive support of the development of rugby across South Africa through its creation and growth of the VUKA Rugby Pro-gramme.

2019 sees VUKA celebrating an incredible 10 years of success. Established in 2008, VUKA has played an ongoing and major role over the past decade in the transfor-mation of rugby by both uplifting and empowering our youth from previously disadvan-taged communities.

Nande’s talent was spotted by SARLA during his participation in various high-profile, talent identification rugby activities. His immense potential was clearly evident when he was selected in both 2016 and 2017 to play in Iqhawe week and in 2018, he was chosen for the A Team for Grant Khomo week. In addition, he participated in the team representing South Africa at the Tricolore Games in Italy.

There is a need to raise funds to support both Nande’s education and sporting re-quirements to ensure the development of his talent as a future South African rugby player. Currently in Grade 11 and supported by Kempton Park High School, Nande is transported daily from his home in Reiger Park to an English education facility. He is then transported to Kempton Park High School for rugby training and back home again.

Global leading timepiece brand TAG Heuer launched the exclusive Springboks Limited Edition Aquaracer in March 2018, dedicated to our Springboks for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. A total of 220 numbered pieces were released, 200 for the South African market and 20 for the UK market.

With a retail value of R27 500.00, the exclusive TAG Heuer Springboks Limited Edition Aquaracer is a true reflection of the Springbok brand. 43mm in size, the timepiece fea-tures a striking green bezel, a first for the TAG Heuer brand, with gold plated index, mi-nute and hour hands, complementing and reflecting the green and gold legacy of the BOK jersey.

Local TAG Heuer agency, Picot & Moss, donated one timepiece, number 94, to SARLA, who auctioned it on Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels show this morning, Wednesday 12 June 2019, to raise funds for the support requirements of the young and talented Nande Maduna.

The Jacaranda FM Good Morning Angels show, with Martin Bester, aims to help change the lives of people in South Africa, which is clearly aligned with the objectives of SARLA. The TAG Heuer Springboks Limited Edition Aquaracer was auctioned live during the show to the highest bidder, Wimpie Carlese, who hails from the West Rand. The atmosphere was full of emotion as the timepiece was auctioned for the incredible amount of R100 000.00, which will contribute greatly to supporting the future educa-tion and training needs of Nande Maduna.

In addition, thanks to SA Rugby, Wimpie Carlese received two tickets to the AUS vs SA Game on the 20 June and the SA Rugby Legends book; Springbok Opus, which de-tails the history of SA Rugby pre and post transformation. The book is set to be auto-graphed by the likes of legends such as John Smit, Stefan Terblanche, James Small and others.

SARLA’s CEO and Springbok Legend, Stefan Terblanche, stated proudly that “This auction reflected the generous heart and spirit of South Africans and illustrated the work that we, as SARLA, hand-in-hand with SA Rugby, do in our mission to success-fully support the transformation of rugby in our country.” He added that “We would like to thank Picot & Moss for the TAG Heuer, Jacaranda FM for their immense generosity, and Kempton Park High School for their support of Nande to date. Thanks to all of you, the rugby playing future of Nande Maduna looks bright.”
