A legendary rugby event will be taking the Drakensberg region by storm this Saturday, 28 August 2021, as the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) will be participating in a rugby day at the Winterton Country Club in Winterton, KZN. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for just R20 per person and kids under 12 can attend for free. Gates open at 10AM.
Family-friendly attractions include a coaching clinic, hosted by SARLA, where the first 100 kids to sign up will receive a free mini rugby ball; a signing session with the Legends; a school hockey tournament; live music, a farmers market, and an epic rugby clash between the Drakensberg Legends and the Natal Legends, featuring assistant Coach John Smit, Keegan Daniel, Brent Russell, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo and many other very familiar names in the squad, with master Coach Ian McIntosh at the helm.
Community outreach is SARLA’s primary purpose, and in this spirit of upliftment, support will be extended to the Umfolozi Creche, which is supported in part by the Drakensberg Sun Resort. The Resort is also a long-time SARLA sponsor, and together with the Legends and their families, will be providing some essentials to the creche, which accommodates 22 girls and 17 boys, from two- to five years old.
Former Springbok Captain and SARLA member John Smit says, “The rugby day is a great family day out for everyone, and the match will be a spectacle to behold. And besides all the fun, we have a great opportunity to make a difference for some really deserving kids. The children at the creche have given us a ‘wish list’ of essential food items they really need and accommodating their wishes will go a long way. There will also be a SANBS blood donation station on site to assist in curbing the national shortage of blood. We invite everybody to come along and enjoy the food, music, and to fire up a braai with us on the day”.
