Day 1 Match Report

Springbok Classics 24 – Canada 26
A try just before the final whistle saw the Canadian Classic’s team pull off a historic victory at the National Sports Centre in Bermuda on day 1.
The South Africans were in the lead throughout the match, starting 10 mins into the game with a try from Conrad Jantjes. Sam Gerber followed with another 5 points.
Canada opened their account with a full house of 7 points, taking the score to 10 – 7.
Debutant for the Springbok Classic team, former Springbok loose forward Ryan Kankowski, proved he’s still got lots of speed tearing down the park from the halfway line for a breakaway try, converted by Monty Dumond, to put the South Africans 17 – 7 ahead.
Not to be left behind, the Canadians came back with a another 7 points to take the score to 17 – 14.
The ding dong battle continued, the Springbok Classics being award a penalty try, successfully converted, to take them 24 – 14 ahead.
The final quarter of the match, though, saw the Canadians breaking through the defensive lines of the South Africans to cross the chalk twice and convert one of these tries, handing them the win 24 – 26.
Earlier, the Irish Legends kicked off the 2018 Classic with an impressive 24-10 victory over the French.
Day 2 sees the Classic Lions up against the Classic Italians, and 2017 victors, the Classic Pumas face the USA Eagle Classics team.
Semi final rounds begin on Wednesday with the Springbok Classics and the French vying for a spot in the Plate Final. The Irish and Canadian’s will play for a place in the Cup Final.
